Lyonville Mineral Spring Established - Jan 1st 1910
Address: Lyonville Springs Road Lyonville Victoria
Lyonville Mineral Spring (or Picnic Area Spring) has two outlets; one from the base of a concrete trench, the other from a bore a few metres closer to the Loddon River.
In 1910 Ferguson from the Geological Survey noted that Lyonville would be an excellent location for a tourist development, having many natural attributes, together with fresh and mineral springs. The tourist resort did not eventuate but a reserve to protect the springs did.
This section of the Loddon River has a number of small springs in the bed of the river and Lyonville Mineral Spring picnic area is at the northern end of the cluster. The other small springs are undeveloped. The picnic area sits between Loddon River Road and the Loddon River and is surrounded by the Wombat State Forest. The spring discharges from a pipe in a concrete trench that extends down to bedrock. Workmen sinking the trench in 1914 were warned to take precautions against being affected by released carbon dioxide gas.
In dry periods flow from the eye in the trench may cease and the Loddon River becomes just a series of pools. The trench has a curved mesh leaf guard to protect it from filling with leaf debris. Facilities include toilets, fireplaces, picnic tables and a small rotunda shelter. A bore, sunk by VMWC in 2007, and hand pump are under the rotunda.
